Easter morning at the ranch does not always arrive with sunshine, green grass, and gentle spring breezes.
Sometimes it arrives with snow on the ground, hay scattered around the feeders, and alpacas gathered together in little clusters while the pasture waits for another warmer day. That is exactly the kind of Easter we are having this year — a very Montana one.
The funny thing is, it fits the season perfectly.
Spring out here is never a straight path. It pulls one way, then the other. We get warm days that make it feel like winter has finally packed up and left, and then a fresh snowfall rolls in and reminds us not to get too confident. The fields that were beginning to green up disappear under white again, and the alpacas switch gears without complaint. They go from nibbling early shoots back to gathering around hay bales, content to let spring take its time.
Alpacas are especially good at this kind of seasonal adjustment. Their fleece still protects them during these late snowfalls, and their steady habits help them handle the constant back-and-forth. They know how to conserve energy, stay comfortable, and move with the weather instead of against it. And little by little, even with the snow, their bodies are still preparing for the warmer days ahead.

That is part of what makes Easter feel so fitting here, even in the middle of snow. For many people, Easter is about celebration, renewal, hope, family, and the sense that new life is arriving even if the world does not look fully green yet. You can feel that on the ranch right now. It is there in the longer daylight, in the changing rhythm of the herd, in the patience of the season, and even in the way the snow cannot quite stop spring from moving forward.
The ranch may look wintry today, but it does not feel like deep winter anymore. It feels like a season on the edge of becoming. The alpacas know it. The land knows it. Even under a fresh layer of snow, spring is still working quietly underneath.

So this Easter, we are celebrating the way we often do out here — with gratitude for the moment in front of us, appreciation for the beauty of change, and a smile at the sight of alpacas standing in the snow as if this was the plan all along.
And honestly, maybe it was. Easter morning, Montana style: a little snow, a lot of fleece, and plenty of reminders that new seasons do not always arrive all at once.
