Yesterday marked our beginning of shearing 2026 here at AlpacaLand Montana, and we officially welcomed shearing season back to the ranch. We sheared 10 alpacas during the day, and tomorrow we’ll do 10 more. The first shearing day of the year is always a little bit of an adventure as we settle back into the rhythm of the process, sharpen our timing, and remind ourselves that every alpaca has its own opinion about getting a haircut. Some stand quietly and cooperate, while others make it very clear they would rather keep all that fluffy fiber exactly where it is.
Even if the alpacas aren’t always thrilled during the actual shearing process, they almost always seem happier afterwards. Alpaca fleece is wonderfully warm during Montana winters, but once spring temperatures start climbing, carrying around all that fiber can quickly become uncomfortable. Shearing helps keep alpacas cool, healthy, and comfortable through the warmer months ahead. It also gives us a chance to carefully check their overall condition from nose to toes while preparing them for summer pasture days.
By the end of the day yesterday, the newly shorn alpacas were already stretching out in the sunshine looking noticeably more relaxed. There’s always something satisfying about seeing them bounce back into the field feeling lighter and more comfortable. Tomorrow we’ll continue with another group, and we’ll be sharing more photos and stories from shearing season as the week goes on.
