Growing Up Fast: How Baby Alpacas Change Over the Summer

It’s amazing how quickly a baby alpaca, called a cria, changes during its first few months. A cria may weigh only around 15–20 pounds at birth, but with plenty of milk from mom and an increasing interest in grass and hay, that little body can grow surprisingly quickly.

By the end of summer, many of our babies look much less like the tiny, wobbly crias we welcomed earlier in the season. Their legs are stronger, their bodies are filling out, and they’re becoming much more confident moving around the pasture. They still have plenty of growing to do, but those first few months make a remarkable difference.
