This week we said goodbye to one of the most special alpacas our ranch has ever known. Ruby was one of the original four alpacas that helped start our herd all those years ago, and she spent nearly two decades quietly becoming a favorite of everyone who visited the ranch.
Ruby had a personality that people instantly noticed. She was incredibly gentle and patient, especially with children. Many visitors will remember the photos of kids laying against her soft fleece while she calmly stood there like it was the most normal thing in the world. Ruby seemed to understand that people needed a friendly alpaca sometimes.
At somewhere between 19 and 20 years old, Ruby lived a long and wonderful life. She was the last of those original four alpacas that began this whole adventure for us. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her memory — and the joy she brought to so many people — will always be part of our ranch.
