Sunshine Changes Everything: How Alpacas Wake Up in Spring

There is something about the first real stretch of warm weather that changes the whole mood of the ranch. After months of cold mornings, frosty air, and snow-covered ground, spring sunshine feels like an invitation. Our alpacas answer it quickly.

As temperatures rise, alpacas often become more animated. They spend more time grazing, roaming, and interacting with each other. On cold winter days, conserving energy makes sense. In spring, that changes. The warming air and longer daylight hours seem to put a little extra bounce in every step.

Another thing we notice is how much alpacas enjoy having dry ground again. Even after a late-season snow, once it melts away and the pasture opens up, they seem delighted to spread out and explore. Fresh smells, tender shoots of grass, and room to move make spring a season of curiosity.

For us, one of the joys of ranch life is watching these subtle changes happen in real time. Spring doesn’t arrive all at once in Montana. It comes in bursts — a snowstorm, then sunshine, frozen mornings followed by warm afternoons. Through it all, the alpacas adapt beautifully. They remind us that change does not have to be rushed. Sometimes it arrives one sunny afternoon at a time.
