When a Moose Visits the Ranch

When a Moose Visits the Ranch

Life on a Montana ranch occasionally brings surprises, and this week’s visitor was a big one. Early in the morning we spotted two moose running along the edge of our neighbors property, passing about 100 yards from our house. For a few moments it felt like time slowed down as this huge animal moved across the landscape, long legs carrying it effortlessly through the brush.

Moose sightings aren’t something we see every day around here, so it was a pretty special moment. They’re incredibly powerful animals, but also surprisingly graceful when they’re on the move. From the side of the house, they looked like a piece of wild Montana simply passing by on its morning route.

The alpacas, for their part, mostly watched with calm curiosity. Our dogs barked at them from a respectful distance. After the moose disappeared over the hill, the herd quickly returned to their usual routine — chewing hay, wandering the pasture, and keeping a quiet eye on the fields as if nothing unusual had happened at all.
