Alpacas are built for changing seasons, and spring is one of the most interesting times to watch them. All winter long, their fleece works hard to keep them warm and insulated through the cold. As temperatures climb, alpacas often seek out breezy spots, open shade, and comfortable places to rest during the warmest parts of the day. They are still wearing their winter fleece, after all. Even though they handle temperature swings better than many animals, you can tell they notice when the air changes from crisp to warm in a hurry.
This time of year also reminds us how amazing alpacas really are. They are hardy enough to stand through a blizzard one week and calm enough to sunbathe in spring warmth the next. Their behavior adjusts naturally. They graze when it is pleasant, rest when it is warm, and take Montana’s unpredictability in stride.
